Chinese Foreign Ministry pointed to the destabilizing role of the US strategy in the South China Sea
The United States seeks to undermine stability in the South China Sea (SCS) for its own geopolitical interests. This was stated by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
«For the sake of its geopolitical strategy, the United States has recently been inflating disputes between the PRC and the Philippines over the Ayungin shoal, provoking an increase in disagreements between the two countries, inciting them to confrontation, undermining peace and tranquility in the South China Sea,» the website of the Chinese Foreign Ministry quoted him as saying. . Wang Yi stressed that in connection with such a position of Washington, the countries of the region should be more vigilant and make efforts to ensure peace and stability in the South China Sea. He recalled that Beijing has repeatedly offered Manila to resolve existing differences through dialogue.
«I hope the Philippines sticks to the consensus that has been reached in the past, cherishes the mutual trust gained through the improvement of China-Philippines relations, seeks cooperation with the PRC, and seeks effective ways to control the situation in the [South China] Sea.» Wang added.
He noted that China is ready, together with the members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), to accelerate the process of negotiating a code of conduct in the South China Sea, which will be in line with international law. «We believe that China and the ASEAN countries have the necessary potential and wisdom to ensure peace and stability in the South China Sea,» the Chinese diplomat summed up.
